Eastern Viaduct is getting an upgrade
The area between Eastern Viaduct and Te Wero, affectionately known as the Barcode, is getting a makeover. Panuku is commencing health and safety improvement works to the surface of the Eastern Viaduct, to enable a safer, more attractive public space in preparation for the 36th America’s Cup.
The original barcode was installed for the 2011 Rugby World Cup as a visual aid to guide people to Wynyard Quarter, Auckland’s newest neighbourhood. In 2018, public car parking was removed from the Eastern Viaduct to improve safety and prioritise the space for people walking and on bikes.
The resurfacing works include removing the existing barcode, repairing any asphalt cracks underneath or beside the existing area and replacing the current barcode with a non-slip surface. The redesign will feature a new mana whenua-led artwork by Reuben Kirkwood from Ngai Tai Ki Tāmaki on the barcode panels, and will span from Prince’s Wharf to the Wynyard Crossing Bridge.
These works will begin on 29 June and take up to five weeks to complete. Watch this space for more updates to come.
