The works to enhance the Eastern Viaduct Quay Street intersection are now complete. Offering a succinct, well designed tie-in to the recently completed downtown works that include the Quay Street enhancements, Te Wānanga and new ferry terminal.

Quay Street is a popular and significant street in the city centre of Tāmaki Makaurau. It runs parallel to the waterfront edge and acts as a gateway and transport hub into the city centre for people on ferries, buses and trains.

As Auckland’s population continues to grow, there was an identified need to transform this important section of thoroughfare into a people-focused place.

Eke Panuku appointed contractor JFC to complete the works and the concept design was developed by LandLAB and supplied by Auckland Transport.

The features of the improvements include:

  • A new road layout offering a shared space for people walking, cycling and driving, finished with stone paving and basalt kerbing

  • ·Two new rain gardens filled with native plantings that treat stormwater runoff before it enters the ground water system

  • Six native trees including one Pururi, one Tānekaha, one mature Pohutukawa (from the existing site) and two Nikau Palms

  • Improved stormwater infrastructure

“It’s great to see these works complete in conjunction with the wider Downtown Infrastructure Development Programme,” says Eke Panuku Project Manager Nicola Beauchamp. “The improvements made to the intersection benefit both people and the environment, and I look forward to seeing the native trees thrive in their new home.”

The six projects of the wider Downtown Programme were completed and celebrated on 2 July, with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern in attendance to mark the occasion. To learn more about the Downtown Programme, please visit the Auckland Transport website for more information.
