The history of Percy Vos, the boatbuilder, is infamous in Auckland’s maritime history. He was a highly recognised master craftsman in both design and construction of wooden boats. His yard built car ferries, fishing boats, launches and mullet boats including ‘Melita’ in 1934 which still sails today. When Percy Vos died in 1972, his passing marked the end of commercial wooden boat building as other materials of choice came into the market. The shed in his Wynyard Quarter yard is a marker of a historic moment in time, and has recently been restored as a both a working wooden boat shed and a celebration of Auckland’s seafaring history.
Stage two of the restoration will include connecting the slipway to the shed – enabling the haul out of vessels.
